Grande Comore
Grande Comore is the largest island of the Comoros off the coast of Africa. The capital of the island is Moroni, which serves as the national capital. Two shield volcanoes make up the island, of which Mount Karthala is the highest point in the country at 2,361 meters above sea level. La Grille at the northern end of the island is 1 087 m high. The Grande Comore's young volcanic soil is very porous, and rain infiltrates quickly into the soil rather than forming permanent rivers and streams. Mount Karthala is covered by untouched moist evergreen forest ranging from 1200 meters to an altitude of about 1800 meters above sea level. The vegetation higher up is made up of stunted trees and heaths, where the giant heather Erica comorensis can be found. Several of the species found on the mountain are only found in the Comoros, and four species of birds are found exclusively on the slopes of Karthala: Grand Comoro Drongo, Humblot's Flycatcher, Karthala Scops Owl and Karthala White-Eye. The mountain's upper slopes and summit cover an area of 14 228 hectares, which has been designated an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International. The Karthala National Park was established in 2010, protecting 262.14 km2 of the mountain.
