Mbéni is a town in the Union of the Comoros Islands, on the northeast coast of the island of Grande Comore, 75 km from the capital, Moroni. It is the capital of the prefecture of Hamahamet-Mboinkou. The town of Mbéni was founded in the 15th century by Sultan Inyehele on the site of an ancient forest. It was he who built the first mosque, near which he is buried. The latter, which bears his name, was demolished in 1986 when the central mosque was enlarged. Since the second half of the 19th century, it has been known as "Mbeni Minara" by the people of Greater Comoro, and for a long time it was considered one of the most important Islamic centers in the Comoros. The town is home to 26 mosques and several Koranic schools, which attract students from all over Grande Comore.
