Moroni is the biggest city, capital and seat of government of the Union of the Comoros. Moroni stands for "by the river". The city has a port and several mosques, including the Badjanani Mosque. The city lies on the west coast of Grande Comore and has a rocky volcanic coastline, mainly without beaches. Among the city's attractions is the historic town center, the Medina, a labyrinth of narrow alleys and ancient buildings. The Karthala volcano nearby is another great hiking spot when the volcano is dormant. The volcano, which forms the background to the city of Moroni, is home to many species of birds, including the Comoro Pigeon, the Karthala Scops Owl, the Comoro Cuckoo-Roller, the Comoro Drongo, the Comoro Thrush, the Comoro Bulbul, the Humblot's Flycatcher, the Comoro Cuckoo-Shrike, the Kirk's White-Eye, the Karthala White-Eye, the Grand Comoro Brush-Warbler, the Comoro Green Sunbird and Comoro Fody.
