Overlooking the east coast of Grande Comore is the Karthala Volcano, one of the largest and most dangerous volcanoes in the world, as the water inside the volcano can heat up and explode, causing the volcano to erupt and produce a rockfall. The last eruptions were in 2005 and 2006, but when the volcano is dormant, hiking is possible, although it is said to be a difficult two-day climb to the top. On the east coast of the island is Chomoni, a beautiful little beach, with beautiful scenery. It has lovely white sand and is usually only crowded by a few individuals, most of whom are locals. The sand forms the beach and the seabed. There are no palm trees to hide behind, but it can be a great place for snorkeling.
