West Coast

The town of Ntsaoueni is located in the Comoros, on the northwest coast of Grande Comore, in the Mboudé region, of which it is the capital. With a population of around 6,500, Ntsaoueni is a distinctive symbol of the history of the Comoros. This was the town through which the Muslim religion was introduced to the Comoros. There are two monuments of great historical value in Ntsaoueni: the tomb of Mtsoimwindza and the tomb of Mohamed Ben Othman, the ninth son of Caliph Othman Ben Affane. From the west coast of Grande Comore, you have a magnificent view of Mount Karthala, which is an Important Birdlife Area. Many of the bird species found on the mountain are found only in the Comoros, and four species are found only on the slopes of Mount Karthala. Here lies the Karthala National Park, which protects an area of 262.14 km2 on the mountain.
