The California Coast, also known as the Golden Coast, refers to the coastal regions of the state. The area covers the North Coast, the San Francisco Bay Area, the Central Coast and the South Coast. The coastline is eroding slowly because of natural processes, which may be accelerated by climate change. Over the past 100 years, water levels have risen less than 150 mm along the coast of California. Over the next 100 years, the water is predicted to rise by up to 2.7 meters, calling into question the fate of a multi-million-dollar houses directly on the coast. The North Coast of California, also known as the Redwood Empire or Redwood Coast, referring to the region's dense redwood forests, lies on the Pacific coast between San Francisco Bay and the Oregon border. The coastline is frequently inaccessible and comprises rocky cliffs and hills, streams and tidal pools. The sparsely inhabited inland interior is characterized by rocky, often steep mountains, divided by rivers and their often narrow valleys and canyons, and dense forests of redwood, Douglas-fir and oak. The southern part of the North Coast is largely urbanized, while the remaining parts are mostly rural. The Central Coast is an area of California that roughly covers the coastal region from Point Mugu to Monterey Bay. It stretches northwest of Los Angeles and south of the San Francisco Bay Area, and contains the rugged, rural, and sparsely populated coastal area known as Big Sur. The South Coast is a region of California that makes up roughly the southernmost third of the California coastline.
