Assomada

Assomada is a town on the island of Santiago in Cape Verde. It has been since 1912 the seat of the municipality of Santa Catarina, which covers the central, western part of the island and most of the interior. Assomada is located at an altitude of about 550 m on a plateau surrounded by mountains, fields and hills in the central part of Santa Catarina. One of the city's most famous attractions is the Assomada Market, founded in 1931 and one of the largest on Santiago Island, full of a wide range of agricultural and handicraft products. Assomada is also home to a museum, the Museu da Tabanka, which is located next to the town. The museum, built by Repartição da Fazenda e dos Correios, is considered an original historical and cultural heritage site. Various carnivals, concerts and other cultural events are held in this cultural center. The museum also houses many documents and paintings.
