Rooi-Els is a small coastal village located in the Overberg region of the Western Cape province. The village is situated approximately 80 kilometers southeast of Cape Town. The name "Rooi-Els" is derived from the Afrikaans language, with "Rooi" meaning "red" and "Els" meaning "alder", referring to the abundance of red-tinged alder trees that grow along the banks of the nearby rivers. This picturesque village has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century, when it was originally established as a small fishing village. Today, Rooi-Els is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world who come to experience its unspoiled natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and tranquil atmosphere. The village is surrounded by breathtaking scenery, with towering mountains, pristine beaches, and lush forests providing a perfect setting for outdoor enthusiasts. The Klein-Hangklip Mountain overlooks the village and is the nesting site of a pair of Verreaux's Eagles. One of the main attractions in Rooi-Els is the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-declared conservation area that is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna.
