Košice

Kosice, the second-largest city in Slovakia, is a treasure trove of history, culture, and education. Located in the eastern part of the country, Kosice has a rich heritage that dates back to the 13th century. The city is home to a plethora of museums, galleries, and cultural institutions. The East-Slovak Museum, originally founded in 1872 as the Upper Hungarian Museum, has an impressive collection of artifacts and exhibits representing the history, art and science of the region. The city's historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a living testament to its rich cultural heritage. The downtown area and most of the historical monuments are situated either in the Main Street or around it, and the town boasts the majority of protected historical monuments within Slovakia. The stunning Cathedral of St. Elizabeth, with its intricate Gothic architecture, is a must-see for visitors interested in history, architecture, and art. The adjacent St. Urban Tower offers panoramic views of the city, providing a unique perspective on the urban landscape. The 14th-century St. Michael Chapel and the neo-baroque State Theatre are also located in the city center. Other main sights include the Executioner's Bastion and the Mill Bastion, which are the remains of the city's former fortification system. The Church of the Virgin Mary's Birth is the Cathedral of the Greek Catholic Eparchy of Kosice. The Old Town Hall, the Old University, the Captain's Palace and the Liberation Square are further sights and monuments of historical and cultural interest.
