Veľká Fatra National Park, situated in the central part of Slovakia, is a protected area that showcases the country's rich biodiversity and unique natural heritage. Established in 2002, the park covers an area of approximately 40,000 hectares, making it one of the largest national parks in Slovakia. Geologically, Veľká Fatra is characterized by a varied landscape, featuring towering mountain peaks, deep valleys, and picturesque plateaus. The park's terrain is dominated by the Veľká Fatra mountain range, which is part of the Outer Western Carpathians. The highest peak, Ostredok, reaches an elevation of 1,596 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Veľká Fatra National Park is renowned for its exceptional flora and fauna diversity. The park is home to over 1,300 species of plants, including several endemic and endangered species. Its forests are dominated by beech, oak, and fir trees, which provide a habitat for a wide range of wildlife, including Brown Bears, wolves, lynxes, and eagles. One of the park's most significant natural attractions is the presence of numerous caves. The most popular cave, the Harmanecká Cave, is open to visitors and features stunning stalactites and stalagmites. In addition to its natural beauty, Veľká Fatra National Park is also rich in cultural and historical significance. The park's cultural attractions include the village of Vlkolínec, a UNESCO-recognized World Heritage Site, which features well-preserved folk architecture and traditional crafts.
