Porches

Porches is a civil parish in the municipality of Lagoa, located around 10 kilometers east of the city. The freguesia region contains evidence of continuous habitation dating back to the Neolithic Age. A menhir discovered in this location and dating back to between 5000 and 4000 BC is presently housed in the entry garden of the Convent of Saint Joseph in Lagoa. According to historical records, the real community of Porches was founded in the middle of the 16th century by a group of settlers from an older urbanization known as Porches Velho, which was located inside the freguesia but closer to the shore. Porches Velho had been populated since the Roman period, and by 1253 it was a sizable town, the center of a judicial district, and home to a strong medieval fortress. Porches is well-known for its wine, but it also has clay pits and pottery studios, and its contemporary people continue to manufacture pottery, keeping this tradition alive. Porches Pottery, founded by artists Patrick Swift and Lima de Freitas in 1968, reintroduced pottery to the region and continues to create handpainted ceramics. With increased tourism, the Porches ceramic industry has returned to profitability, producing both classic patterns and innovative creative forms. In addition to its rich cultural heritage, Porches is also renowned for its stunning natural beauty. The parish is surrounded by rolling hills, verdant forests, and picturesque villages, making it a popular destination for hikers, cyclists, and nature lovers. The nearby Ria de Alvor, a protected natural reserve, is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including rare birds, fish, and other species.
