Jebel Shams

Jabal Shams, also known as Jebel Shams, is a captivating mountain located in northeastern Oman, just north of the town of Al-Hamra. Renowned for being the first place in Oman to receive the sunrise due to its elevated peak, Jabal Shams stands as the highest mountain in the Hajar range and indeed the entire country. This majestic natural wonder has become a popular sightseeing destination, drawing visitors from far and wide to witness its breathtaking beauty. One of the main attractions of Jabal Shams is the remarkable Al Nakhur Canyon, often referred to as the Grand Canyon of Arabia. The awe-inspiring views and rugged terrain of this canyon make it a must-see for anyone visiting the area. Nearby, Jabal Akhdar, another prominent peak in the region, adds to the allure of the landscape, creating a remarkable backdrop for adventurous explorations. The pinnacle of Jabal Shams, the North Summit, is home to a military base and is thus a restricted area. The Ministry of Tourism, Sultanate of Oman, specifies its height to be 3,009 meters above sea level. Meanwhile, the mountain also boasts a second summit, the South Summit, which is accessible to the public for trekking through the W4 Trail. This captivating trek provides an opportunity to experience the natural beauty and panoramic views of the surrounding area, with the South Summit reaching an elevation of 2,997 meters. With its stunning vistas, diverse topography, and unique natural features, Jabal Shams stands as a testament to the awe-inspiring landscapes that Oman has to offer.
