Oslo, located at the head of the Oslo Fjord in the southeastern part of the country, is the capital and largest city of Norway. It used to be located east of the Aker River, and it was founded by King Harald Hardraade around 1050. The city has a rich and storied history that has seen it evolve from a modest fortress city to a bustling metropolis. The city's growth and development have been shaped by significant events, such as the devastating fire of 1624, which led to the establishment of a new town by Christian IV of Denmark-Norway. This new town, named Christiania, eventually grew in influence and population, eventually being renamed Oslo in 1925. Nowadays, Oslo is celebrated for its vibrant cultural scene. The city is home to a multitude of esteemed cultural institutions, including the National Theatre, the Norwegian Theatre, the Oslo New Theatre, the Oslo Concert Hall, and the Norwegian Opera. Furthermore, Oslo boasts a rich array of museums and galleries, such as the Historical Museum, the National Museum of Art, Architecture, and Design, and the Munch Museum, which houses an exceptional collection of works by renowned artist Edvard Munch. The city's commitment to preserving its heritage is evident in its array of museums dedicated to maritime history and exploration.
