Momotombo Volcano

Momotombo is an impressive stratovolcano located in close proximity to the beautiful city of León. It is standing on the shores of Lake Managua. The volcano has had several eruptions throughout history, including in 1610 which caused the inhabitants of the then-Spanish city of León to migrate some 48 kilometers to the west. The ruins of this city are preserved at León Viejo. More recently, it erupted on November 30, 2015, and February 28, 2016. Despite these events, the surrounding area remains a beautiful and unique destination for tourists and adventurers alike. The symmetrical form of the mountain has become a symbol of Nicaragua, appearing on everything from matchboxes to revolutionary paintings. Prior to the eruption that occurred one year later, the volcano was a popular tourist destination, with many visitors in 1904. The poem 'Momotombo' was written by the Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío in honor of the volcano. A geothermal field is found on the south side of the volcano. To ascend the mountain, visitors must obtain a permit, cross through the geothermal power plant, and follow a clearly marked trail across the tree line. Due to the active nature of the volcano and the risk of mudslides, the route from the tree line to the summit is subject to constant change. One possible route to consider is ascending directly through the small avalanche paths. This can be a thrilling experience for those who enjoy a bit of adventure.
