Windhoek, the capital and largest city of Namibia, is a bustling metropolis that sits atop the Khomas Highland plateau area, at an elevation of around 1,700 meters above sea level. Located almost precisely at the country's geographical center, Windhoek is a city that is constantly growing, with a population of 486,169 in 2023, due to a continued migration from other regions in Namibia. Windhoek is both the social and economic hub of the country, as well as the political and cultural center of Namibia. The city is home to almost every Namibian national enterprise, governmental body, educational and cultural institution, all of which are headquartered there. The city's history dates back to the early 1800s, when it developed at the site of a permanent hot spring known to the local tribes of shepherds. The town developed rapidly when Jonker Afrikaner, commander of the Orram, settled there in 1840 and built a stone church for his congregation. However, the settlement was neglected and destroyed due to multiple wars and armed hostilities that followed. In 1890, when the territory was colonized by the German Empire, Windhoek was founded for the second time by Major Curt von François of the Imperial German Army. Since then, the city has continued to grow and develop with modern infrastructure, skyscrapers and a vibrant cultural scene. Windhoek is now a cultural melting pot, with a mix of traditional and modern, making it a unique and fascinating city worth exploring.
