The southern region of Ifaty, with its two small fishing villages, Mangily and Madio Rano, offers a delightful and relaxed atmosphere. Situated approximately 90 minutes north of the town of Tulear, Ifaty enjoys an abundance of sunshine, boasting around 300 days of sunshine per year. The region is also blessed with three areas of private forest, each offering unique experiences. The spiny forest, known for its wild and prickly flora, is home to Ring-Tailed Lemurs that effortlessly cling to the sharp thorns of the trees, seemingly unaffected by their needle-like overhangs. However, the area is not limited to lemurs and flora; it also offers fantastic birdwatching opportunities and the chance to spot reptiles and White-Spotted Lemurs resting in the trees. Within Ifaty, there is a forested area called the Village des Tortues, which serves as a sanctuary for a turtle breeding and conservation project led by a French organization. Moreover, the other forest areas in Ifaty are home to some of the largest ancient baobab trees in the southwest of the island. These majestic baobabs, some of which are believed to be over 1200 years old, add to the area's natural beauty and cultural significance. While the region is generally dry and hot, the spiny forest has adapted to these challenging conditions. However, it still faces the threat of deforestation, making the area an important conservation zone. For divers, Ifaty offers an offshore coral reef that stretches over 100 kilometers in the lagoon area. This vibrant coral reef provides excellent diving opportunities, allowing visitors to explore the abundant and colorful marine life, including the chance to dive among various species of sharks.
