Mt. Kenya National Park

Impressively standing at a striking height of 5,199 meters, Mount Kenya is not only the second highest peak in Africa but also an ancient extinct volcano. Its rich geological history is evident in the 12 remnant glaciers that can be found on the mountain, although they are sadly receding at an alarming rate. Additionally, the mountain boasts four secondary peaks that overlook the U-shaped glacial valleys, adding to its breathtaking beauty. The diverse landscape of Mount Kenya includes rugged, glacier-clad peaks, as well as lush forested mid-slopes. Within the park, visitors can explore approximately 20 lakes and tarns, each with its own unique charm. The mountain is dominated by three major peaks, namely Batian (5,199m), Nelion (5,188m), and Point Lenana (4,984m). While Batian and Nelion are primarily sought after by technical climbers, Point Lenana offers a challenging yet accessible summit for those who prefer a less technical ascent. Apart from its stunning scenery, Mount Kenya is also recognized as a Biosphere Reserve. The park's pristine wilderness is home to a wide range of wildlife, including buffalo, elephants, Black and White Colobus Monkeys, Sykes Monkeys, Rock and Tree Hyrax, White-Tailed Mongoose, suni, Black-Fronted Duiker, Mole Rats, bushbucks, waterbucks, and elands. Additionally, lucky visitors may catch a glimpse of rarely seen animals such as leopards, bongos, Giant Forest Hogs, Suni Antelopes, Mt. Kenya Mole Rats, skinks, mountain vipers, and various species of owls. Bird enthusiasts will be delighted to know that over 130 species of birds have been recorded in the area, making it a haven for birdwatching enthusiasts.
