Shaumari Wildlife Reserve

The Shaumari Wildlife Reserve is located near the town of Azraq, about 100 kilometers from the capital city of Amman. It's an outstanding and unique environmental project dedicated to the preservation of the region's wildlife. The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature opened the reserve in 1975 as a center for the conservation and breeding of endangered species and wildlife of the surrounding desert environment. The reserve supports the ecosystem of these endangered animals and covers 22 square kilometers. It contains some of the Middle East's rarest and most endangered wildlife, among them birds, owls, oryx, gazelle and onager. Altogether there are about 193 species, including plants, especially there are several types of carnivorous plants. The reserve is a hidden gem that is attracting the attention of tourists to the region as it offers a fascinating insight into some of the rarest species of animals and a chance to see them thrive in their natural habitat, unaffected by outside threats such as hunting. A visit to Shaumari Wildlife Reserve is informative and exciting for nature enthusiasts and anyone who wants to learn more about the unique wildlife of the area, with a guided safari through the grounds and a small museum. The reserve also contributes to scientific studies by monitoring and observing the animals to better understand their habits, threats, and reproduction. Jordanian universities use the reserve to research, study and understand environmental conservation because the environment is both safe for the animals and ideal for study.
