Mount Nebo

Mount Nebo attracts visitors from around the world. The holy mountain in Jordan stands over 700 meters high. It is believed that before his death, Moses gazed upon the Promised Land from this magnificent vantage point. The scenery is breathtaking, you can see the Dead Sea, Bethlehem, Jericho, and on a clear day, Jerusalem. The Memorial Church of Moses is located on the top of the mountain, which is an important place for the Christians. In accordance with the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses died on Mount Nebo and was buried in Moab. During the 4th century, Egyptian monks built a small monastery on the top of the mountain in memory of Moses, which is now known as the Memorial Church of Moses. After being rebuilt in the 5th century, the Memorial Church was transformed into a basilica and today still stands at the zenith of Mount Nebo. The brilliant remnants of Byzantine mosaics, which can also be found here, have been subjected to a restoration process to depict the entire route of the King's Highway - an ancient trade route that ran through Jordan. This incredible collection is an amalgamation of wildlife and local customs from Byzantine times. Mount Nebo is aslso home to the Brazen Serpent sculpture. It represents the biblical Brazen Serpent from which Moses saved the Israelites. The statue has become so famous that it is now considered a symbol of the site itself. Those who choose to visit Jordan during the Christmas season can take part in the midnight mass at Mount Nebo, which is open to all. It appeals to foreign visitors as well as locals because it is held in both English and Arabic.
