Madarihat also called Uttar Madarihat is a town and located in West Bengal. It is situated on the periphery of Jaldapara National Park, which is known for the Indian Rhinoceros. Madarihat is one of the most important tourist spots in North Bengal. It's surrounded by tea gardens, forests, hills and small rivers and has a very diverse population. For the local wooden furniture Madarihat is also world famous. The district of Alipurduar, which is the location of the town, is a vast area in the eastern end of the Dooars in West Bengal. It is a hilly country, mostly forested, with many rivers coming down from the outskirts of the Himalayas in Bhutan. It is mainly a rural area with almost 80% of the population residing in the countryside. There is 1 municipal town and 20 census towns in the district, and this means that about 20 per cent of the population is living in the urban areas. In all six community development blocks of the district, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes together constitute more than half of the population. The three northern blocks of the district have a high concentration of tribal people.
