Bandipur National Park

Bandipur National Park, located in the Indian state of Karnataka, is one of the most renowned wildlife reserves in the country. Established in 1974, the park is a protected area of 912 square kilometers, nestled in the Western Ghats Mountain range. Its unique location, straddling the Deccan Plateau and the Nilgiri Hills, makes it an ecological hotspot, supporting a diverse range of flora and fauna. The park's terrain is characterized by rugged hills, valleys, and plateaus, with elevations ranging from 680 to 1,450 meters above sea level. The landscape is dotted with scrub forests, dry deciduous forests, and evergreen forests, providing a habitat for a wide variety of plant species. The park is home to over 1,000 species of flowering plants, including trees like teak, sandalwood, and rosewood. Bandipur National Park is perhaps best known for its rich wildlife heritage. The park is a haven for the Asian Elephant, and it is also one of the few places in the country where you can spot the majestic Bengal Tiger. Other predators found in the park include leopards, dholes, and jackals. In addition to its iconic predators, the park is home to a wide range of other animals, including herbivores like chital, sambar, and gaur, as well as primates like langurs. The park's avifauna is equally impressive, with over 200 species of birds documented, including the Red-Headed Vulture, the Indian Vulture, the Crested Serpent Eagle, the Changeable Hawk-Eagle, as well as many species of bee-eaters and kingfishers.
