Kis-Balaton

Lake Kis-Balaton is a landscape area south-west of Lake Balaton, rich in natural and cultural values, a significant part of which is protected. The area is the estuary of the Zala River, which has always been a marshy area with a markedly fluctuating water level. This unique combination of geological and hydrological factors has created a diverse and dynamic ecosystem, supporting a wide range of flora and fauna. The protected areas within Lake Kis-Balaton, including the Kis-Balaton Wetland and the Zala River estuary, are designated as Natura 2000 sites, recognizing their importance for conservation. These areas provide habitat for numerous species of birds, fish, and other aquatic life, as well as supporting a variety of plant species adapted to the unique conditions of the wetland environment. In addition to its natural significance, Lake Kis-Balaton is also an area of great cultural importance. The area has been inhabited for thousands of years, with archaeological evidence showing human presence dating back to the Neolithic era. The region is dotted with historical settlements, churches, and other cultural monuments, providing a fascinating glimpse into the region's rich cultural heritage. Attractions include the Kányavári Island, the Kis-Balaton Show House, the Kis-Balaton Visitor Centre and Nature Trail, the Cyril and Methodius Memorial Column, the Kápolnapuszta Buffalo Reserve and the Zalakaros Thermal Baths. The unique combination of natural and cultural values in Lake Kis-Balaton has led to the development of sustainable tourism initiatives in the area. Visitors can explore the region's natural beauty through guided boat tours, hiking, and birdwatching excursions.
