St Andrew's Coast

St. Andrew's is Grenada's largest parish. Its capital is Grenville, Grenada's second largest town after St. George's. Grenville is also called La Baye. The French named the parish Morne de Combat in the 1650s and it was part of the French Territories. From 1795 to 1796 Marquis was the first Parish Capital, and in 1796 Grenville became the capital of Saint Andrew's. With several important Amerindian archaeological sites and colonial-era cocoa, coffee and sugar plantations, the area is rich in history. With a large nutmeg processing plant and a busy Saturday market, Grenville is the commercial center for this part of the island. Many of the historic buildings date from the 1800's, including some beautiful churches, the court house and police station.
