Sauteurs

Sauteurs is the sixth largest town on the island of Grenada and is a fishing village in the Saint Patrick Parish overlooking Sauteurs Bay. The town's name has its origins in a story about an ambush by the French on a group of Caribs in May 1650, and the killing of about 40 of them. The story is that some of the men had jumped off a cliff in order to be spared capture. This is how the town came to be called Sauteurs, which means "jumpers" in French. In 1721, the French built St. Patrick's Catholic Church in the settlement. In 1784, the British government turned it over to the Anglicans. Later, however, the church was destroyed by a fire. Today, the site is occupied by a police station. In 1840, a new St. Patrick's Catholic Church was built and is still standing to this day.
