The Mpivié is a blackwater river, characteristic of the small rivers which drain the coastal lowland forests. With its fringe of swamp forest, it has a true "jungle feel". A number of rarely seen and highly specialized bird species are often seen along its banks, including Pel's Fishing Owl, African Finfoot, Hartlaub's Duck and White-Crested Tiger Heron. Slender-Snouted Crocodiles basking on overhanging logs can be seen on sunny days.
