Evengue is a small island in the huge Fernan Vaz lagoon, a thirty-minute boat ride from the town of Omboue. The island is a wonderfully tranquil and safe haven for birds, mammals, and reptiles, including the Dwarf Crocodile. For those interested in ecotourism, Evéngué, or Gorilla Island, is a protected area open to visitors. Their primary mission is to improve the quality of life of gorillas threatened by human activities and, where feasible, to reintroduce them into the wild. The Fernan-Vaz Gorilla Project operates a sanctuary and reintroduction center on Gorilla Island. It is now home to two gorillas who are part of the project's efforts to educate visitors about the plight of these magnificent animals. A further eight orphaned gorillas are also living there, away from human contact, with the aim of releasing them back into the wild.
