The Loango National Park is located in the western part of the country of Gabon. There are very few places left in Equatorial Africa where you can go on safari and experience the "Big Five" game. However, Loango National Park's exceptional range of biodiversity and unspoiled ecosystems offer wildlife enthusiasts and adventurous travelers this exceptional opportunity. It is famous for its beachcomber Forest Elephants and the surfing hippos that roam its wild coastline. The park protects a variety of coastal habitats, including part of the 220 square kilometer Iguéla Lagoon. This is the only major example of a characteristic West African Lagoon system. Located between the lagoons of Nkomi and Ndogo, the park covers 1550 km2 of savannah, beach, forest and mangrove forest. The area also offers the opportunity to see elephants, buffalos, hippos, gorillas and leopards venturing ashore. The Loango Coast has the highest concentration and diversity of whales and dolphins in the world, second only to South Africa. The area is home to over 100 kilometers of unpopulated coastline with Humpback and Killer Whales. There are distinct dry and wet seasons in Loango National Park. But with plenty of opportunities to come face-to-face with wildlife, each season has its own special charm. From November to March nesting turtles and hatchlings arrive, elephants and hippos head to the beaches from November to April, and migratory whales arrive during the breeding season from July to September.
