Matemwe

Matemwe is a village on the northeastern coast of Unguja, the largest island of the Zanzibar archipelago. Its economy is mainly based on seaweed farming and fishing, which have been the backbone of the local community for generations. The villagers of Matemwe have developed a unique expertise in seaweed cultivation, harvesting, and processing, which has enabled them to capitalize on the growing global demand for seaweed-based products. The village's favorable location, with its crystal-clear waters and coral reefs, makes it an ideal spot for seaweed farming. The farmers of Matemwe use traditional methods, passed down from their ancestors, to cultivate a variety of seaweed species. The village is best known worldwide for its pristine white sand beaches with only a few and expensive tourist facilities, making it an upscale holiday spot. In front of the village is a lagoon and coral reef, and the small atoll of Mnemba, a popular spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. Giant Trevallies, Trumpet Fish, anthias, groupers and snappers are some of the fish species that can be easily seen in the area. The crystal-clear waters of the lagoon and the coral reef offer a unique opportunity for marine enthusiasts to explore the rich biodiversity of the Indian Ocean. The coral reef, in particular, is home to a vast array of marine life, including Sea Turtles, rays, and colorful fish species. The reef's complex structure, with its coral formations, seaweed beds, and sandy bottoms, provides a habitat for a multitude of creatures.
