Jozani Chwaka Bay National Forest is a pristine and protected area located in the heart of Zanzibar Island. This remarkable forest reserve is a testament to the country's commitment to preserving its rich biodiversity and natural heritage. Spanning an area of approximately 50 square kilometers, the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Forest is a vital habitat for a wide range of flora and fauna. The forest is characterized by a unique mixture of tropical rainforest, coral rag forest, and mangrove forests, providing a diverse and complex ecosystem that supports an astonishing array of plant and animal species. One of the primary purposes of the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Forest is to serve as a sanctuary for the endangered Kirk's Red Colobus Monkey. This charismatic primate is endemic to Zanzibar and is found nowhere else in the world. The forest provides a safe haven for these remarkable creatures, allowing them to thrive in their natural habitat. Sykes Monkeys, Bush Babies and more than 50 species of butterflies and 40 species of birds can also be found in the park. The forest helps to regulate the water cycle, mitigate the effects of climate change, and provide natural barriers against storms and erosion.
