The Northwest Territories is an Arctic Serengeti, where strange animals and rare birds roam. This is the home of the Musk Oxen, a four- to five-foot-tall sheep-like ungulate weighing up to 700 pounds, a relic from the Ice Age. They have an extremely warm wool undercoat covered with a shaggy mane of dark brown fur. Their diet consists of willows, shrubs and crow shoots. The Beluga is the most commonly sighted whale in the Northwest Territories. These white cetaceans are known for their chirping vocalizations, flexible necks and rounded foreheads. They feed on permanent marine fish, can grow up to 18 feet long and weigh up to two tons. Also living in the northwest area are White Pelicans, Moose, Barrenground Caribou, Dall's Sheep, Bison, Grizzlies, Reindeer and Polar Bear.
