The Cousin Island is a tiny granitic island of the Seychelles, which lies 2 km to the west of Praslin. The island is a nature reserve and an Important Bird Area, recognized for its exceptional biodiversity and ecological significance. The Cousin Island is a haven for a wide range of flora and fauna, providing a unique opportunity for scientists, researchers, and eco-tourists to explore and learn about the natural world. The island's granitic terrain, characterized by rugged hills and valleys, supports a diverse array of plant species, including endemic trees, shrubs, and flowering plants. The forest cover, dominated by the iconic Coco De Mer palm, provides a habitat for a variety of bird species, many of which are found only in the Seychelles. The island's avifauna is particularly notable, with species such as the Seychelles Warbler, the Seychelles Blue Pigeon, the Seychelles Fody, the Seychelles Magpie-Robin and the Wedge-Tailed Shearwater, making it a vital breeding ground for these endangered birds. The island has several species of endemic Seychelles lizards, a freshwater turtle Pelusios subniger, and Aldabra Giant Tortoises. It is also an important nesting site for Hawksbill Turtles and sometimes Green Turtles. As a nature reserve, Cousin Island is protected and managed by the Seychelles Islands Foundation, a non-governmental organization dedicated to conservation and sustainable development. The organization works tirelessly to preserve the island's natural heritage, implementing measures to control invasive species, restore habitats, and promote eco-friendly tourism practices.
