Mount Moco

Mount Moco is Angola's highest mountain at 2,620 meters. Located in the Huambo Province, it is a prominent geological feature in the western branch of the Southern African Plateau. The mountain's rugged terrain is characterized by steep slopes, deep valleys, and numerous watercourses. The mountain's summit is marked by a distinctive flat-topped plateau, which is surrounded by a series of subsidiary peaks. The highest peak, known as Morro do Moco, is where the mountain's highest point is located. The mountain's climate is characterized by mild temperatures, ranging from 10°C to 20°C, and high levels of humidity throughout the year. The region experiences a seasonal rainfall pattern, with the majority of the precipitation occurring during the summer months. This has resulted in the development of a lush and diverse vegetation, comprising tropical rainforests, savannas, and grasslands. Mount Moco is also home to a wide range of flora and fauna. The Afromontane forests of the mountain are part of the Angolan montane forest-grassland mosaic bioregion. The area is home to a great variety of birds, with approximately 233 species recorded at the site. The area has been declared an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International and is part of the Western Angola Endemic Bird Area. The mountain is a haven for a number of endangered and threatened bird species, among them the Angolan Slaty Flycatcher, the Swiersta's Francolin, the Angolan Cave Chat and the Ludwig's Double-Collared Sunbird.
