Yolyn Am

Yolyn Am, a deep and narrow gorge in the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains of southern Mongolia, is a remarkable natural wonder. The valley derives its name from the Lammergeier, known as Yol in Mongolian. This Old World Vulture has earned the valley alternative names such as "Valley of the Vultures" or "Valley of the Eagles." Situated within the Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park, Yolyn Am finds its place in the Zuun Saikhanii Nuruu subrange of the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains. Being part of the arid Gobi Desert, the region experiences minimal rainfall. However, what sets Yolyn Am apart is its extraordinary ice field. As winter progresses, the ice field grows to several meters in thickness and stretches for several kilometers. In the past, the ice field remained intact throughout the year, but in recent times, it tends to vanish by September. Apart from the Lammergeier, the gorge is home to other fascinating bird species. Both the Himalayan and Cinereous Vultures can be spotted soaring through the skies above the gorge. Additionally, the Altai Snowcock, Wallcreeper, and Mongolian Finch are among the diverse avian residents that find solace in this picturesque valley. Yolyn Am is not only a haven for birds but also a sanctuary for various mammalian species. The valley provides a habitat for the argali, the Siberian ibex, and the Snow Leopard. These magnificent creatures roam the valley, adding to its rich biodiversity. Visitors to Yolyn Am are captivated by the stunning beauty of the gorge, with its towering cliffs, rugged terrain, and the contrasting sight of the ice field against the arid desert backdrop.
